As a primate veterinarian, I was invited to visit PPI June 21-22, 2009. The program at PPI has made necessary corrections and is functioning well. It continues to improve. I support PPI and I hope PeTA will recognize the harm they are doing. PeTA please open your eyes – look at PPI today!

Leveling the Playing Field

This bill levels the playing field for egg producers in California with those out of state egg producers. If your laying hems do not meet the Prop. 2 standard, you can’t sell you eggs in California.

Egg bill pushed by unusual alliance

AB 1437, supported by the Humane Society of the United States, would prohibit the sale in California of out-of-state eggs produced by farms that don’t adhere to the California standard, which under Prop. 2 requires that certain farm animals have room to move freely.

The bill passed the Assembly Agriculture Committee recently on a unanimous vote, including “ayes” from Assembly members Tom Berryhill, R-Modesto, and Connie Conway, R-Tulare.

Carole C. Noon, Who Founded Save the Chimps, Dies at 59

Dr. Carole C. Noon, a primatologist whose passion — and compassion — for her subjects led to her founding of Save the Chimps, the organization that provides the world’s largest sanctuary for captive chimpanzees, died Saturday in Fort Pierce, Fla. She was 59 and lived on the sanctuary grounds in Fort Pierce.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, said her sister Lee Asbeck.

Animal research rallies peaceful; pro-research demonstration much larger

Competing rallies at UCLA today over the controversial issue of animal research are peaceful so far, with supporters of the research appearing to outnumber opponents by more than 10 to 1.

About 400 people, including UCLA faculty, staff and students, have joined a pro-research rally on the northwest corner of Westwood Boulevard and Le Conte Avenue, just south of the campus. The demonstrators are carrying signs with such slogans as “Animal research saves lives” and “Campus terrorism is not OK.”

FBI’s newest ‘Most Wanted’ terrorist is American

WASHINGTON – For the first time, an accused domestic terrorist is being added to the FBI’s list of “Most Wanted” terror suspects.

Daniel Andreas San Diego, a 31-year-old computer specialist from Berkeley, Calif., is wanted for the 2003 bombings of two corporate offices in California.

Authorities describe San Diego as an animal rights activist who turned to bomb attacks and say he has tattoo that proclaims, “It only takes a spark.”

Officials have offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to his capture, five times the reward amounts offered for other so-called eco-terrorists wanted in the U.S.

UCLA Community to stand up for Biomedical Research

The campus movement,
UCLA Pro-Test,
has organized a demonstration on
Wednesday, April 22nd
in order to support medical research; it will coincide with the “World Week for Animals in Laboratories” rally organized by various anti-research extremist groups.
The upcoming UCLA Pro-Test demonstration parallels the 2006 demonstrations by the UK student organization Pro-Test, which opened the public debate on animal research in the UK and contributed to the downfall of animal rights activism in the UK.
One of UK Pro-Tests founders, Tom Holder, will be on hand at the Los Angeles rally to show his support for our efforts and to emcee the event.

Dog breeders hoping agriculture will join HSUS fight

As agriculture grapples with exactly how to confront the growing animal rights movement, the dog breeding industry—and other domestic animal groups—are anxious to see the ag industry become more involved.

“I would like to see them ‘cowboy up’,” says Cindy Cooke, legislative director for the United Kennel Club, the world’s largest all-breed registry for working dogs. “Get in the trenches and stand up for agriculture.”

Cooke and her organization have battled the Humane Society of the United States, at different levels, for several years. She suggests that all segments of agriculture need to unite against HSUS.

“Most Americans still want to eat meat,” Cooke says. “If it’s presented to the average American in a sensible way they can understand, most times they’re going to take our side. That’s been my experience and I believe it can be true for agriculture. But everybody’s got to stand up, because they focus on the weak links.”
